To start organizing your own trekking program at Serra da Bocaina and Bocaina National Park, you must remember that, first, you need to arrive at São José do Barreiro; then check-in at MW Trekking office, and finally you go to Serra da Bocaina by a 4WD car.
This whole process demands some time, so we recommend that you start your plans as we do below:
Previous Day:

------ - Check-in at MW Trekking Office located at São José do Barreiro main square.
------ - Departure by 4WD car to Pousada Recanto da Floresta at Serra da Bocaina (two hours trip).
20:00 – Dinner (Typical Brazilian food full of organic vegetable from its own vegetable garden).
------- - Time to sleep.
Last Day:
08:30 – Breakfast.
09:30 – Departure by 4WD car back to São José do Barreiro.
11:30 – Arrival at MW Trekking office – end of our services.
DAY TREKKING OPTIONS:

FULL DAY
1. Bacia Peak Trail.
Bacia Peak is the second highest peak of Bocaina Mountains.
From the top, at 2050 metres, it offers a striking view of Paraiba Valley with its ocean of hills, towns, lakes and Bocaina Mountain range.
From there, it’s possible to observe the meaning of “Bocaina” (an Indian name for two mountains, one in front of the other).
Bacia Peak is one of the most incredible and beautiful places from Serra da Bocaina.
Walk Distance: 16km.

Duration: Approximately 6 hours.

2. The Cliff Trail.
The Cliff Trail starts crossing The Enchanted Wood, a very typical forest covered by “Cambuís” (an interesting twisted tree) and hundreds of different species of plants. In the highest point of the trail, at 1.800 metres, there is a Delta Fly Ramp from where we can see the whole Paraiba Valley and its little towns. At the end of the Cliff Trail, it’s possible to swim in the cold water of Paredão’s Waterfall.

3. Bocaina National Park – Hike to Marrecas and Posse Waterfall.
In this hike, we visit two beautiful waterfalls of Bocaina National Park.
We start following a small path inside Bocaina National Park.
The path is great to hike because it’s in the middle of the forest.
With luck, it is possible to observe different birds, monkeys and other typical animals.
The Waterfalls provide a wonderful bath in their very clear and cold water; in sunny days it is also possible to have a very relaxed sunbath on the big stones of the waterfalls.
Walk Distance: 26km.

Duration: Approximately 9 hours.

4. Tira Chapéu Peak Trekking.
Tira Chapéu Peak is the highest peak of Serra da Bocaina and Bocaina National Park.
The trail starts at Pousada Recanto da Floresta at 1640m height and it ends on the top of Tira chapéu’s Peak, at 2.200m height.
To get there, basically the trail is up hill crossing some forests and altitude camps. Full of mountain views, from the top of the peak, in clear days, it is it possible to observe Paraty Bay, the ocean, and Paraiba’s Valley.
Walk Distance: 20km.

Duration: Approximately 8 hours.
5. Barreiro Valley Trail.
Starting to walk in the city centre of São José do Barreiro, just from the beginning the participants can observe the group destiny – Bacia’s Peak, the second highest peak from Serra da Bocaina.
From the top, at 2050 metres, we have a striking view about Paraiba Valley with its ocean of hills, towns, lakes and Bocaina range of mountains.
We also can understand the meaning of “Bocaina” (an Indian name for two mountains, one in front other).
Note: We can do this trekking starting at Pousada Recanto da Floresta and go down to the town of São José do Barreiro.

6. Formoso Valley Trail.
Generally we do this trekking starting at Pousada Recanto da Floresta, going up to Sobrado’s Hill and descending from it using an old trail throughout forests and flowered fields called by the locals as “Bocaininha land”, ending our trekking day in a very delicious waterfall named as “Mata” Waterfall.
In the middle of the way, the trail becomes a little path, making our trekking easier; at this point, we start to have an incredible view from Paraíba Valley and Mantiqueira range of mountains.
Walk Distance: 25km.
Trekking degree: Medium.
Duration: Approximately 7 hours.

HALF DAY
1. The Green River Trail.
The Green River is a very beautiful trail throughout a marvellous rain forest that ends at the Cave Waterfall.
In the trail, it is possible to observe a lot of different trees, orchids, flowers and, with luck, some animal like armadillos and monkeys.
The hike is easy and nice, with a lot of rain forest views and very clear water ponds.
For those brave ones, The Cave Waterfall offers a unique opportunity to bath in a very special human untouched clear and cold water.
Walk Distance: 10km.
Trekking degree: easy.
Duration: Approximately 3 hours.
2. Bocaina National Park – Hike to Santo Izidro (The Main Waterfall).
Located inside The Bocaina National Park, 5 km from Pousada Recanto da Floresta, Santo Izidro Waterfall is known as “The Post Card of Serra da Bocaina” or “The little Paradise”.
It has 120 metres in total and 80 metres in the main fall, with a big pool very good to swim.
This is one of the best places to relax and be integrated with the nature.
Walk Distance: 10km.
Trekking degree: easy.
Duration: Approximately 3 hours.
3. Walk to the Stone House Ruins.
Easy walk through a little road with small river crossings and nice mountains views.
Built in old French style by the French Physician Dr. Lassance to be a gift to his wife, The Stone House was finished in 1914.
Dr. Lassance’s wife unfortunately didn’t like the place and never visited it again.
Closed for a long time, a small family started to live at the Stone House. After that, it became a school, until a group of walkers had slept and made a bonfire at the second floor of the house. Because of the fire, the floor felt down with part of the roof. The walls also started to fall later and the entire property had assumed the aspect of ruins, a view far from the rich aspect that it had in early times – the golden age of the Stone House.

4. Enchanted Forest and Paredão Waterfall.
The walk starts through a beautiful forest full of an interesting twisted tree known as “Cambui tree”.
During the Enchanted Forest crossing, it is possible to observe several different plants, like micro orchids, bromélias, mushrooms and tiny flowers. The first place we visit is the “Puma Waterfall”, that offers a delicious bath. Then we finally get at Paredão Waterfall with its big stone where it is possible to relax and have a very good sunbath.
Paredão Waterfall is a very good place to study, read, swim or just relax beside the nature.

Serra da Bocaina is a very big mountain region located between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
It is known as the Trekking Paradise in Brazil and it has hundreds of trails, waterfalls and peaks with very nice mountain views.
At the top of Serra da Bocaina (1600m high), Serra da Bocaina National Park is located, the biggest national park from southwest of Brazil.
The door of Serra da Bocaina National Park is São José do Barreiro, a little town in São Paulo state, 273km far from São Paulo Capital city and 214km from Rio de Janeiro.
